An Introduction

Trompe l'Oeil, meaning "trick the eye" in French, is a technique creating the illusion of three dimensions to suggest that an image is real. Trompe l'Oeil painting was very common in the Greek and Roman times, during the Renaissance and in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Rooms have been transformed by "faux" finishes like stonework or marbles and windows or arches opening onto imaginary gardens.

.

In the province of Genoa, Northern Italy, Trompe l'Oeil have had an immense succes as fake windows, stone effects were created to give depth and imposant posture to the exterior of public and private buildings.
